What is the Vo2 Max?

During exercise, your heart and lungs work together to pump oxygenated blood around your body to the muscles, where the oxygen is being used. The more oxygen your body can use, the longer your muscles can work.

The Vo2 Max measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use, or maximal oxygen consumption. By improving your Vo2 Max, you will increase the amount of time you can exercise for and also increase the intensity in which you can perform at. The better your Vo2 Max is, the easier the exercise will feel!

How is Vo2 Max Calculated?

VO2 max measures the millilitres of oxygen used per one minute, per kilogram of body weight (mL/kg/min). The test is normally carried out in a sports laboratory and involves the subject running on an incline treadmill as fast as possible until exhaustion, whilst wearing a breathing mask. The breathing mask, measures the amount of oxygen your body can use per kilogram per minute.
